Raindrip Water Timer unreliable

I bought a Raindrip battery operated (non digital) water timer about a year ago (May 2011).It cost almost $50 at Ace Hardware.

It's a nice, solid looking unit, but unfortunately, it's not reliable. It will not shut off after the selected time. Truth is, I haven't had much luck with battery operated timers of any make. The AC powered ones (reduced to 24-28V) are much more reliable, if installation is practical.

I was just hoping to find something I could connect to a hose bibb without running wires. So far no luck.
